Click & collect vs cash and carry: which saves your business more time?

If you run a convenience store, takeaway, or vending operation in the Midlands, you probably restock at a major cash and carry at least once a week. It works, but have you ever added up what those trips actually cost your business? Walking the aisles, queuing at the checkout, and loading the trolley all take time, and every hour away from your shop floor or kitchen has a price.

The real cost of cash and carry trips

A typical cash and carry run takes around two hours. That includes driving to the depot, parking, walking the aisles, queuing at the checkout, loading your vehicle, and driving back. For most businesses, that happens at least once a week.

Two hours per trip, 52 weeks per year. That is 104 hours a year spent shopping instead of serving customers, managing staff, or growing your business. For a convenience store owner who also works the till, that is 104 hours of lost selling time. For a takeaway owner, it is 104 hours away from the kitchen.

The drive is only part of it. Much of that time goes on the parts of the trip you cannot plan around: hunting for a line that has moved aisle, working out which pack size is the better deal, and waiting in a checkout queue behind other traders with full trolleys.

What major cash and carries require

Most major cash and carry depots require a membership card before you can shop. You will need to provide proof of business registration, which is straightforward enough, but it is still a barrier that adds friction. Some depots also set high minimum spend thresholds, sometimes £500 or more per visit, to make the trip worthwhile for their business model.

The range can be overwhelming too. Thousands of product lines across a warehouse the size of a football pitch. If you know exactly what you want, you can get in and out efficiently. But if you are comparing prices, checking new lines, or dealing with out-of-stock items, two hours can easily become three.

Then there is the physical work. Every case you buy is lifted off the shelf, onto a trolley, through the checkout, and into your vehicle. That is a lot of lifting for a routine restock.

How click & collect compares

With click & collect, the picking is done for you. You place your order online, choose a collection slot, and your cases are picked and waiting when you arrive. You pull up, give your order reference, load, and go. Collecting a picked order takes minutes, not hours.

At UK Wide Food Supplies, there is no minimum order and no membership. Our depot is at Unit 4 Westmill St, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, a short drive from the A500, and it is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm. Order at least 90 minutes before the end of a slot and you can usually collect the same day. Pay by card online, or pay on collection by cash, card, or bank transfer.

Our prices are published too. Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Monster, Mars, Snickers, and more are listed in our shop with public prices including VAT. Approved trade customers see trade prices ex VAT with a trade code. You know the total before you leave, so there are no surprises at the till.

When cash and carry still makes sense

Cash and carry is not always the wrong choice. If you need a wide range of lines beyond drinks and confectionery, or you want to browse stock in person before buying, a trip to a large depot can work. Some businesses also find special offers at cash and carry that are hard to beat.

The smart approach is to order your regular, predictable stock ahead for collection (the products you buy every week) and save cash and carry visits for one-off purchases or special deals. That way, you get the time savings on the bulk of your restock without missing out on occasional bargains.
