Why independent shops are switching from cash and carry to click & collect
More independent retailers are swapping the weekly cash and carry trip for ordering online and collecting a picked order. No membership and no minimum.
For decades, the weekly cash and carry trip was just part of running an independent shop. You closed early or started late, drove to the depot, pushed a trolley round the aisles, queued at the checkout, loaded the car and drove back. It was the only option for most small retailers. But that is changing.
More independent convenience stores, corner shops and off-licences are switching to ordering ahead online and collecting from a local wholesaler. The reasons are practical, not theoretical. It comes down to time, money and a better way of working.
The problems with cash and carry
Cash and carry works, but it comes with costs that are easy to overlook because they are so routine:
- Time: a typical trip takes two hours or more once you add up the aisles, the checkout queue and the loading. For a shop owner who also works the till, that is two hours of lost sales every week.
- Membership: most large depots want you to hold a card before you can shop, which means paperwork, proof of business and sometimes a visit in person just to sign up.
- Physical effort: lifting cases of drinks and confectionery off the shelf, onto a trolley, through the checkout and into your vehicle is hard work. It gets harder in bad weather and as you get older.
- Minimum spend: some depots expect you to spend £500 or more per visit. That pushes small shops to over-order or buy products they do not really need just to justify the trip.
- Impulse buying: walking through a warehouse full of special offers leads to unplanned purchases. That "great deal" on a product your customers do not buy ends up gathering dust on your shelf.
What order-ahead click & collect offers instead
Click & collect flips the model. Instead of doing the picking yourself, you send your order in advance and the wholesaler picks it for you. When you arrive, it is ready to load. For independent shops, the advantages add up:
- No minimum order: buy one case or as many as you need. You can order smaller, more often, and keep your stock turning over.
- Prices you can see first: our prices are published in our shop, so you know what you will pay before you set off. Approved trade customers can apply for a trade code to see trade prices ex VAT.
- No membership: no card to apply for, no annual fees and no forms to fill in before your first order.
- Time back: placing an order online takes a few minutes. Collecting a picked order takes minutes rather than hours, because there are no aisles to walk and no checkout queue.
- Same-day stock: order at least 90 minutes before the end of a collection slot and you can usually collect that day, which helps when a line sells out faster than expected.
- Disciplined ordering: when you order from a list rather than walking through aisles, you buy what you need and nothing else. Your cash flow stays tighter.
Who is making the switch
Convenience store owners are the biggest group. They stock a predictable range of soft drinks, confectionery and snacks that they reorder weekly. Ordering ahead fits this pattern because the order is similar each time, and a quick collection keeps shelves full without over-stocking.
Takeaway owners are also switching, particularly for soft drinks. A takeaway that sells cans with meal deals needs a steady supply of Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Fanta. Picking up a ready order in a quiet part of the afternoon is far easier than losing half a day to a depot trip before evening service.
Vending operators are already on the road all day. Collecting a picked order on the way out suits a packed restocking schedule far better than walking a warehouse before the first machine of the day.
